Maintaining design health: the support surrounding design systems

How do you know your next design decision has solid foundations? Sure, there’s your design system, and you’ve spoken to some UX researchers, but surely someone’s looked into this problem before? From high level design principles down to specific design history rationale, I'll expose how Trade Me props up its design system with context and our experiences of the last 5 years rebuilding the site alongside its design system. Our squads are considering code and design health now, so that in 20 years’ time we will have an evolved, stable, easily maintainable and quick-to-build-on application. How can we ensure our products maintain their current beauty (not just skin deep!)?

Mark is a Senior Product Designer: full-time for Trade Me as well as freelance for contract clients. Over the past four years he has been on teams implementing and managing the rollout of a new design system and coordinating with commercially diverse business units to redesign every core user flow across Trade Me for its responsive redesign. His passions lie with the design process, what emerging technology enables for design and how this affects the product and ultimately user and business outcomes.
